Dr. Tony walks through exactly how a same-day crown is made at Smile Lounge in Narre Warren, from preparing the tooth to the final glazing step.
Preparing The Tooth
The process starts with removing any decayed, weakened, or previously filled material from the tooth, leaving only the strong, healthy structure behind. This preparation step is the foundation for everything that follows.
Why This Step Matters
Building a crown onto a tooth that still has weak or decayed material underneath would undermine the whole restoration, so this initial clean-up is treated as carefully as any other part of the process.
Digital Scanning And Design
Once the tooth is prepared, it is scanned to create a digital model of the prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth. This digital information is used to design a same-day crown shaped to fit accurately alongside the neighbouring and opposing teeth.
From Design To Digital Mill
The completed design is sent to a digital milling machine, which shapes a solid block of material down into the crown design, working in a similar way to a small-scale sculpting process rather than building the crown up from scratch.
Glazing And Fitting
The milled crown is then placed in a furnace for glazing, a step that smooths the surface and helps the material reach its final strength. Once glazing is complete, the fit and appearance are checked before the crown is fitted into place.
Why It All Happens In One Visit
Because the scanning, design, milling, and glazing steps are all completed in-house, the entire process can take place within a single appointment, rather than requiring a temporary crown and a return visit weeks later.
