If you are dealing with a
dental emergency right now, call us on
(03) 8820 1115. We keep same-day emergency spots available for exactly this situation. We will get you in as quickly as possible.
Now, here is what you need to know about handling dental emergencies while you wait.
Knocked-Out Tooth: Time Is Critical
If a tooth has been completely knocked out, you have a window of about 30 minutes to an hour for the best chance of saving it.
What to do:
- Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root
- If it is dirty, rinse gently with milk or saline, not water
- Try to place it back in the socket if you can
- If you cannot, put it in a container of milk
- Get to us immediately
Do not wrap it in tissue or let it dry out. The cells on the root need to stay alive for reimplantation to work.
Severe Pain or Swelling
Intense toothache with facial swelling often indicates an infection. This is not something to wait on or manage with painkillers alone.
Signs you need urgent care:
- Pain that keeps you awake or stops you eating
- Visible swelling in your face, jaw, or gums
- Fever alongside dental pain
- Difficulty swallowing or opening your mouth
These symptoms can escalate. Call us straight away rather than waiting for a regular appointment.
Broken or Chipped Teeth
For a minor chip without pain, you can usually wait a day or two for an appointment. But if the break exposes the inner tooth or causes significant pain, that needs same-day attention.
Save any large pieces of the tooth if you can. Rinse your mouth gently and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
Lost Fillings or Crowns
A lost filling or crown is uncomfortable but not always an emergency. Keep the area clean, avoid chewing on that side, and call to book an appointment within a few days.
If you are in significant pain or the area is very sensitive, we can see you sooner.
