You’ve probably noticed that
teeth whitening options are everywhere. From supermarket strips to online kits to professional treatments, the choices can feel overwhelming.
If you’re looking for teeth whitening in Narre Warren, understanding the difference between professional and over-the-counter options can help you make a decision that’s right for you.
At Smile Lounge, Dr Tony Liu offers cosmetic dentistry consultations to assess whether whitening is suitable for your teeth and discuss realistic expectations for your specific situation.
Why Professional Whitening Works Better
The whitening products you buy at the supermarket contain lower concentrations of active ingredients than professional treatments. That’s not a criticism of those products. It’s simply a legal requirement, as higher concentrations can only be used under professional supervision.
Professional whitening uses prescription-strength products that penetrate more effectively and produce more noticeable results. The trade-off is that professional treatments cost more. But many people find the results are worth it, particularly if they’ve tried over-the-counter products without success.
How Take-Home Whitening Works
At Smile Lounge, we primarily offer take-home whitening kits with custom-fitted trays. Here’s what the process looks like:
Consultation: We start with an assessment. Not everyone is a good candidate for whitening, and some types of discolouration respond better than others. We’ll look at your teeth, discuss your goals, and let you know what’s realistic.
Impressions: If whitening is right for you, we’ll take impressions of your teeth to create custom trays that fit precisely. This matters because well-fitting trays hold the whitening gel against your teeth evenly and prevent it from irritating your gums.
At-home treatment: You’ll receive your custom trays and professional-strength whitening gel, along with clear instructions. Most people wear their trays for 30 minutes to an hour each day over one to two weeks, though this varies.
Results: Once you’ve completed the course, you’ll come back so we can assess the results and discuss maintenance.
What Results Can You Expect?
Whitening works well for most people, but results vary depending on several factors:
The type of discolouration matters. Surface stains from coffee, tea and red wine respond well to whitening. Deeper, intrinsic discolouration from medications, trauma or genetics may be more challenging.
Your starting shade affects outcomes. Teeth that are already relatively light won’t change as dramatically as darker teeth.
Dental work doesn’t whiten. Crowns, veneers and fillings won’t change colour. If you have visible dental work, we’ll discuss how to manage this.
For most people, professional whitening lightens teeth by several shades. We can give you a better idea of expected results at your consultation.
How Long Does Whitening Last?
Results typically last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on your habits and maintenance.
Things that shorten results:
- Regular consumption of staining foods and drinks (coffee, tea, red wine, berries)
- Smoking
- Not maintaining good oral hygiene
Things that help maintain results:
- Rinsing with water after consuming staining substances
- Using a whitening toothpaste for maintenance
- Touch-up treatments every few months (your custom trays make this easy)
Managing Sensitivity
Tooth sensitivity during whitening is common. Most people experience some temporary sensitivity to cold during treatment, which resolves once you stop.
We can help manage this by:
- Adjusting the strength of the whitening gel
- Recommending sensitivity toothpaste before and during treatment
- Suggesting shorter wear times
- Spacing out treatments if needed
If you already have sensitive teeth, mention this at your consultation. Whitening may still be possible with the right approach.
Who Isn’t a Good Candidate for Whitening?
Whitening isn’t suitable for everyone. We may recommend alternatives if:
- You have extensive decay or gum disease that needs treatment first
- Your discolouration is caused by factors that won’t respond to whitening
- You’re pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have very sensitive teeth that would make treatment uncomfortable
- Veneers or crowns would better address your concerns
If whitening isn’t right for you, we can discuss other cosmetic options like veneers or bonding.
